Local Social Club Awards College Scholarship

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

The Blue Gill Fishing Club awarded their annual college scholarship of $500 on April 6 to high school student Paul Thomas, Jr, who was accompanied by his father, Paul Thomas, Sr.

Paul Jr, a senior this year at Sylvania Northfield High School, is headed to Miami University in the fall in hopes of a double major that will lead to a career as a data analyst. He has already sampled the college environment having spent a week at Yale University during his last summer vacation attending a workshop for young entrepreneurs.

Paul has also been an active member, an ambassador, of Books4Buddies.

The Blue Gill Fishing Club was organized in 1992 by five community men. “It was first a social club, we would take fishing trips together at least once a year. We still fish once a year, but we’ve grown in the services we provide to the community. We provide hot dogs for youth during the summer at the nearby park,” said Al Chapman, one of the original club members.

The annual scholarship is reviewed by club members who assist in raising funds. The club seeks promising young people who deserve their scholarships – they also donate to the Kitchen for the Poor, the Cherry Street Mission and other local charities.
