Friends Celebrate Robert Smith and 15 Years of the African
American Legacy Project
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
Fifteen years ago, Robert Smith shared an idea to open a
facility, a memorial if you will, to house the history of
the African-American community of northwest Ohio. With the
help of acquaintances, friends and members of that
community, he did just that.
Over the years, Smith has managed to celebrate the
contributions of local African-American legends, sports
legends and community accomplishments while enlisting the
participation of thousands of members of the community in
the process.
On Saturday morning, December 14, a number of those friends
gathered at the offices of the African American Legacy
Project to surprise Smith and congratulate him on the
success of the 15-year old venture.
Board members, past Legacy honorees, friends and admirers
paid tribute to Smith and he also received a portrait of
himself by artists Robert Shorter, who also happens to be
one of the Legends honored by the AALP.
