Dozens of fathers and father-figures enjoyed an evening
filled with parent-engagement activities on Friday, May 18,
2018 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy for Boys.
Festivities started at 6:00 p.m. and ended shortly after
9:30 p.m. The main objective of the evening aligns with the
Academy’s theme, “Where we are helping boys of Destiny
become Men of Distinction.”
“This is powerful. We, as brothers, get a bad rap at times.
Whether people know what they are talking about, or just
repeating what they see on television. This is a powerful
event, and I’m glad that I can support this. We have strong
and responsible men, and especially fathers, in the city of
Toledo. Society needs to see more men like the ones that are
here tonight,” explained Vice Principal William White.
The Academy’s principal, Willie Ward, EdD, and Toledo Public
Schools superintendent Romules Durant, EdD delivered an
official welcome and greetings to all the excited fathers,
father-figures and MLK Academy students. Various special
guests offered encouragement to the men in attendance,
including: Brothers United and Boys II Men of Distinction,
Inc.
“Fathers have a special place in my heart. I applaud the
fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and other adult male role
models that took the time to bond with their son tonight.
Each of you have no idea, how much I appreciate your time
here with these young men,” saidd event co-organizer Sheila
Cook.
The remainder of the evening provided fathers and
father-figures with different activities including:
basketball, video games, a movie, and different game boards
that was scattered throughout the Academy building. The
event welcomed at least 55-pairs of sons and father-figures
for an evening of male bonding.
