The Junction’s Fun Functions This Summertime!
By Shirley Preston, The Junction Coalition
Guest Column
According to
Webster’s Dictionary the word Coalition is defined as
an “alliance for combined action, especially a temporary
alliance of political parties forming a government or of
states”.
With that being said, here is what the “Junction Coalition ”
has been up to and our schedule of events for the coming
months:
The Annual “Pancake Thang”
will be held on May 19 at the Frederick Douglass Community
Association from 10 am to 1 pm. Tickets are $10 donation
for all you can eat pancakes. Sausage, bacon and eggs are
also on the menu. There is a 70’s theme and we will provide
the following activities spades, bid whist, and dancing in a
soul train line. There will also be a pop-up clinic hosted
by Linda Barnes and other collaborative partners on health.
We will be wrapping up our
Circles and Verses program with a showcase on the 23rd
of May. Our students will present highlights of our first
year and it begins at 5:00 p.m.
The Junction Coalition is
a proud partner with Promedica, Neighborhood Health
Association, African American Male Initiative, Minority
Health Association and other community health initiatives in
bringing “Stand by Your Man” to the Frederick Douglass
Community Association. This is a call for our men to be
screened for and educated in prostate and colorectal
health. There will be screenings and presentations by
doctors, survivors and family members affected by prostate
cancer. The date for this event is June 30 from 11:00 a.m.
– 3:00 p.m. Save the date and plan to attend.
The Coalition is also
gearing up for our second annual Urban Rib Off. We’re
planning on building on our success of last year as it was a
great event. The Rib Off will be held at Libbey Field on
September 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Save the date and
come on out to enjoy a family day of food and fun.
A “shout out” to Family
Foods and LISC for investing in our neighborhood grocery
store and improving not only the appearance, but the quality
of merchandise for sale to our local residents. Let’s not
forget Officer Donald Scott who is our Community Resource
Officer and has information in regards to local crime
reports.
We are also very thankful
to our Junction Health Mart for providing our pharmacy needs
at the Dorr and Junction Plaza. The Junction Health Mart
Grand Opening was this past Friday, May 18, 2018 from 11:00
until 2:00 p.m. We are thankful to the our government
officials and city partners like Land Bank, City of Toledo
Police and Department of Neighborhoods, Guns to Garden and
the Healing Our Waters Coalition for their support “What
Blooms on Blum”, our beautification project.
Issues and concerns
related to blighted and vacant property should be brought to
the attention of Anique Davis @ 419-408-0998. Street
