13th Annual African American Festival
This year’s African
American Festival, held once again as part of the Northwest
Ohio Rib-Off at the Lucas County Fairgrounds on Sunday,
August 20, brought in a huge crowd to enjoy some fabulous
weather, tons of barbecued meats and side dishes and a
varied slate of entertainment headlined by The Zapp Band.
The Festival, started and
organized by Suzette Cowell and the Toledo Urban Federal
Credit Union, has grown in attendance from a few hundred
guests in its first several years. In addition to The Zapp
Band, the entertainers were local legend Ramona Collins,
vocalist Cherrelle along with the Jerusalem Mass Choir, the
Indiana Avenue Missionary Baptist Church Mass Choir, Amy
Nicole Meredith & the Greater New Psalmist Mass Choir, the
First Church of God Combined Choirs and comedians Darrell
Banks, Larry “The “Phenix” Walker and Harriet Hardy.
Darius Coleman served as
master of ceremonies for this year’s event.
