Myrtice Walker Celebrates Her 100th Birthday with Friends

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

Myrtice Walker was born in Macon County, Georgia – probably Montezuma, GA – and moved to Swanton, OH as a child with her family. That birth took place 100 years ago and on Friday, April 24 – two days before her birthday – she celebrated the event at the Spencer Township Neighborhood Center in Holland, OH.

The actual birth place is uncertain because her records are incomplete. It is known that she had 12 older siblings. It is also known that she received no formal schooling in the segregated South but taught herself to read and write. She still reads from her favorite book, the Bible, every night.

Myrtice Walker

Walker married Oscar “Peter” Walker during World War II whom she met while she was working in an airplane parts factory. Oscar Walker died in 1978. He built the home in Swanton where his widow still resides.

Myrtice Walker is a member of Love Baptist Church in Swanton and has served in a number of church ministries for more than 50 years.
