The Purple Event on the River: A Fundraiser for Second Chance

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

The Purple Event on the River, a fundraiser for Second Chance, comes this way on Saturday at Forrester’s on the River!

Second Chance, a non-profit agency that offers comprehensive services to women victimized by prostitution, to girls who have been victimized by sex trafficking and to girls at risk of being victims of sex trafficking is currently the only such program in Toledo that follows the Social Work Code of Ethics.

As with many area non-profits over recent years, maintaining the funding to carry on programs offered by Second Chance is a source of concern. This Saturday, two local women, Donnetta Carter and Cheryl Leonard, will pool their energy and resources to hold a fundraiser for Second Chance.

The Purple Event on the River will commence at 6 pm on October 18 and feature live entertainment – C.J. Manning & Company with Marcia Bowen, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, a variety of vendors and all for only $30.

“Second Chance is extremely excited to be a part of the Purple Event,” says Executive Director Kizzy Williams. “People like Ms. Carter and Ms. Leonard are appreciated as they help us raise the needed funds to keep our program operating.”

Second Chance was founded in 1993 as a result of the efforts of Celia Williamson, Ph.D, professor of Social Work and Criminal Justice at The University of Toledo, who is perhaps the leading voice in the area as an advocate for victims of sex trafficking.

The design of the program was based on over 500 hours of interviews conducted with such victims. The staff of Second Chance are experienced social workers, trained survivors, undergraduate and graduate interns and other professions. The program offers individualized service plans which include intensive case management, advocacy, information and referral services, harm-reduction, education, trauma treatment and support groups, among other plans.

“Second Chance served over 90 women and youth last year who were involved in human trafficking or at an increased risk of being involved,” says Williams. “We continue to work with the Lucas County Human Trafficking Coalition. The Coalition has educated and trained over 40,000 people in this year alone in Ohio and Michigan.”

For tickets or more information contact New York Collection or call 419-367-9765.

Don’t forget to wear purple on Saturday!
