Second Baptist Church Sponsors Annual Wellness Walk

By Tricia Hall

Physical fitness and healthy eating are two principles of the Second Baptist Church Wellness Committee’s annual walk-a-thon. The event, held at Secor Metropark on July 19, 2014, opens with fellowship, nature walk and lunch for all attendees.

“It has been successful for the past two years. We have been blessed to increase the number of participating family members, friends, and church family that fellowship with us,” explained Varetta Glover, Wellness Committee co-chairman.

“We don’t pay enough attention, we need to stop reacting and become proactive. I thank the committee for their work with this walk,” said Rev. J. L. Boose, D. Div, pastor of Second Baptist Church.

In addition to the walk-a-thon, the wellness committee sponsors community health-related activities at Spencer Community Center, where Second Baptist Church is currently operating. “We’re planning a blood drive, health fair and exercise programs in August and September of this year,” said Glover.

The walk-a-thon is also a building fund fundraiser for the congregation and received support from wellness committee members: Chairman Lorraine Smith, Co-chairman Varetta Glover and members Lorraine Bartley, Debra Johnson, Christine Shumpert and Lee Smith.

There was also community support from: The Andersons Inc, Gordon Food Service, John Eldred of Midwest Tapes, Key Bank, Kroger’s, Meijer’s, Second Baptist Church, and Walmart Supercenter.

“In the next two years, we plan to break ground. We want a building that can be utilized seven days per week, as a blessing for the community,” said Rev. Boose.

Second Baptist Church is currently located at Spencer Township Neighborhood Center located at 330 Oak Terrance Blvd, Holland, Ohio.
