Students from The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State
University, Lourdes University and Owens Community College
received scholarship awards funded by AAI. In addition, the
AAI celebrated the launch of Real Men READ-y; a
collaborative partnership with AAI, Toledo-Lucas County
Public Library, Read for Literacy and Toledo Public Schools.
AAI is an affinity group of United Way of Greater Toledo. It
is comprised of a diverse group of corporate, professional
and nonprofit community leaders charged with positively
impacting the African-American community by advocating
effective initiatives through strategic partnerships,
leadership development and volunteerism.
AAI’s primary focuses are aligned with the goals of United
Way of Greater Toledo by prioritizing opportunities that
improve education, income and health within the
African-American community.
Scholarship awardees were selected by their respective
university’s faculty and staff to interview and were
selected by members of the AAI scholarship committee based
on need and pre-determined criteria. Awards ranged from
$500-$1000 per student.
Real Men READY is a pilot program that recruits, trains and
places African-American adult working/retired males to read
and interact with 12 African-American kindergarten boys at
Leverette Elementary School.
AAI of United Way partners with Read for Literacy, Inc.
staff to operate the pilot, which includes a comparative
study that will measure outcomes of success for participants
near the end of May 2014. AAI of United Way also partners
with the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and Toledo
Public Schools for this initiative.
The goal of Real Men READ-y is to ensure that
African-American male children have the necessary literacy
skills to be successful in school from kindergarten to high
school graduation. The pilot also seeks to encourage and
motivate students to enjoy the gift of reading. |
