Toledo
Urban Federal Credit Union became the first, and remains the
only, community development credit union in the city of
Toledo, since opening its doors in July 1996. Local
community leaders founded the credit union including: Ken
Alderson, Suzette Cowell (the first and only CEO the credit
union has known) Rev. Robert Culp, Roosevelt Gant, Minister
Rick Hunter, Alto King Jr., Edwin Mabrey and Bishop Duane
Tisdale.
The
credit union held a meeting with community stakeholders on
May 20, 2014, hosted by Sarah Bates at her Career Pathway
Center on Trust Drive, to announce campaign progress – the
Building Better Futures Campaign – and provide visuals of
the pending building.
Currently, the credit union manages 2,100 individual
members, 129 organization memberships and assets of more
than $4.3 million within rented office space in a strip mall
located on Dorr Street.
“Our
Toledo-area community is needed to participate in this
event, that will jump start a building that will be here for
a long time. We plan to occupy the new building within one
year,” said Michael Killian, Toledo Urban Foundation board
member.
The
proposed 3,200 square-foot facility would provide
confidential space for banking and business purposes,
include an ATM and drive-up window, and provide an
additional 25 parking spaces for members at the intersection
of Detroit Avenue and Dorr Street. The campaign goal is
$750,000 will cover the design and construction of the
facility and also opening operational costs. The Foundation
has raised over $360,000 in pledges.
“We have
gained tremendous ground, our membership has grown. There is
no breathing room in the current location, expansion is
necessary to continue our serve to the community. It’s a
necessity to move,” said Deborah Beyer, Toledo Urban
Foundation board member.
Campaign
donations are payable to Toledo Urban Foundation, Inc. The
foundation was organized in 2012 to raise funds on behalf of
the credit union to achieve success in the campaign and
provide ongoing support of the credit union’s mission.
“Anyone
can contact the credit union with questions. Our hope is
that the community will help us build the new facility. This
credit union is a community resource and asset. Donations of
a dollar or over a period of years will help,” said Richard
LaValley, Jr. Toledo Urban Foundation board president.
