Thoughts of Ernestine Weathers: 1957 - 2014

By Rhonda B. Sewell
Special to The Truth

Back in 1970, the poet Mari Evans penned the moving poem titled I Am A Black Woman. Within the poem are several lines that so remind me of the late Ernestine “Stina” Weathers (1957-2014).

Ernestine “Stina” Weathers

Stina would have only been 13 at the time Evans wrote these moving lines of her poem, but how befitting they were to our late friend and her impact to the greater Toledo area. : I am a black woman, tall as a cypress, strong, beyond all definition still, defying place and time and circumstance …

When the news hit among various professionals in the media field and in the community about the loss of Stina, a former longtime Community Affairs Director at WTVG 13abc, many of us were appropriately saddened. We all shared stories of how she helped us, how her smile was contagious, and of how fiercely she protected her privacy.

But more than that Stina was a trailblazer. She was never recognized properly during her lifetime for breaking racial barriers in the Toledo media field, but she did just that. She opened doors for future reporters, journalists, producers and behind the scenes staff members in both the television news and print media.

When I was a tender 21-year-old starting out my career as a journalist at The Blade newspaper, it was Stina who befriended me as a more established and seasoned media professional. Whenever we spoke in person or on the phone, Stina was uplifting and supportive and nurtured me throughout my media career.

As I sat inside the House of Day Funeral Home recently at her home-going services, my prayer was that Stina in the afterlife would be made fully aware of how much we all thought of her, how meaningful and impactful her life was to all of us in the media arena, and more importantly, that her legacy would live on forever.

We have lost a beautiful angel who opened doors for many in the media business. Our good friend Ernestine "Stina" Weathers has gone home to Glory. We will remember the good times, honor her legacy, and recall that beautiful smile. Far too young to leave us, but God probably needed her for some important Community Affairs issues in Heaven.

Thank you Stina for your positive energy, we will miss you and are already working to name a scholarship in your memory because we know that's what you would want from us! – Rhonda Sewell

I called upon a few friends to leave their own personal testimonies for Ernestine “Stina” Weathers and here’s what they shared:

Jala Anderson McKee – Former WTVG 13abc anchor “Stina was my safe place while working at WTVG. You could hide away in her office for a short period of time and talk about how you “really” felt. She was a quiet storm and helped so many of us mold our careers. She was a beautiful songstress at my wedding. Oh Stina, God got a real angel!”

Schylar Meadows – Juice Talk Host WJUC 107.3 FM/Political analyst “She will be missed. THANK YOU Stina for all you did. I got to know her well during our Leadership Toledo year. I was in church with her in choir for a while too. So blessed to have known her. Her voice was beautiful, and she cared about humanity. She especially wanted media professionals to succeed, survive and excel. Wow! Another angel has gone home to God.”

Clyde Hughes –  Former Blade reporter/founder of the former Northwest Ohio Black Media Association “My memories of Stina and how she helped the Northwest Ohio Black Media Association and me (NOBMA founder) during my time in Toledo are too numerous to state. Stina was not only a valuable person to know in the local media, but also a friend. I remember when NOBMA gave her an award for her work at WTVG and in the community, and she felt like she didn’t deserve it. I can assure you because of her guidance, leadership and willingness to care, she did deserve it and then some.”

Kristian Brown
– WTVG 13abc anchor “Stina’s smile could brighten a room and her singing voice could bring you chills. She was always there to encourage others when they needed it the most. She will be missed. I hid in her office plenty of times too! She was a wonderful person and I’m so glad she’s at peace.”
