The University of Toledo National Youth Sports Program
Special to The Truth
For the last 45 years, the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP)
has provided income eligible youth, between the ages of nine
and 16, educational and recreational opportunities to
enhance their self-image and teach the value of
communication, learn lifetime leisure pursuits and to
develop peer refusal skills and learn healthy nutrition and
health behaviors.
This program serves as a model for fair play and contributes
to the development of life skills that are necessary for
success in a competitive society. With generous donations
from community partners, our program is able to provide its
participants with a FREE summer program that includes a
medical exam, transportation, daily sports instruction i.e.
basketball and track, an alcohol and other drug awareness
education, general education, personal nutrition,
self-esteem, etc., t-shirts and a daily USDA approved hot
lunch.
The success of our youth
depends on us; a successful future depends on our youth. In
2004, the University of Toledo's National Youth Sports
Program received Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence
recognizing UT's NYSP as the best program in the Nation for
2004. That was the second year in a row that the UT NYSP won
this award. The UT NYSP serves as a model program for other
universities across the United States.
Those who have taken
active roles in the program have been sensitive to the needs
of our participants. The staff consists of parents,
principals, teachers, social workers, college students, UT
student athletes, and other community and university
leaders. The University of Toledo boasts an excellent
participant-staff ratio of 10 to 1. With the ongoing support
of our community, the University of Toledo's National Youth
Sports Program will continue to be the benchmark for the
best.
NYSP is located on the main campus of The University of
Toledo which will operate from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, starting June 9 through June 27,
2014. An NYSP application/medical exam form is required to
be completed in order for participants to register for this
year’s program. NYSP will be offering free medical
examinations, administered by the Toledo Children’s Hospital
on May 28 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
