Notre Dame Academy Has Five “Eagles” Sign to Play College Sports

Five Notre Dame Academy (NDA) seniors signed to play college sports on April 23 in front of the student body before the spring pep rally. Rachael Cannon will play lacrosse for Colorado State University-Pueblo, Jasmine Garrett will run track for Notre Dame College (OH), Michelle Lortie will play lacrosse for University of Findlay, Kelsie Steinmetz will run track for Ohio Wesleyan University, and Chantalia Young will run track for Akron University.

 

Rachael Cannon has been a member of the lacrosse team all four years at NDA. Off the field, Rachael has received second honors in academics and also an award for sustaining a 3.5 GPA or above while playing a varsity sport. At NDA, she is a captain of the Hip Hop Team, participated in Big Sis Little Sis program, and a Spanish peer tutor.

 

She performs as part of Key of She, a cappella group, and in NDA’s fall musicals. Within the community, Rachael has been involved in volunteering at the USPS Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, Little Sisters of the Poor and was also a summer volunteer at Mercy St. Ann’s Hospital. She also played club lacrosse with the Michigan Cyclones.

In the fall, she will attend Colorado State University-Pueblo (CSU).

 

She was honored with the Pepsi Annual Scholarship of 1,000 with a four-year value of $4,000, CSU-Pueblo Athletic Scholarship of $5,000 with a four-year value of $20,000, and a CSU-Pueblo Welcome to the Pack Scholarship of $1,000.

 

Jasmine Garrett ran sprints and participated in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay. She was First Team, All TRAC Conference last year.

 

She has been involved in the African American Club, Fitness Club, Hispanic Club, Hip Hop Team, and Gospel Choir. She has been a Big Sis to Notre Dame Junior Academy (NDJA) students and helped at their junior high dances. She is involved in Friendly Missionary Baptist Church where she performs as a praise dancer and teaches young children to do praise dancing.

 

She plans to major in political science and minor in pre-law at Notre Dame College (OH).

 

Michelle Lortie is a midfielder for the lacrosse team. She has played varsity all four years and was named Honorable Mention, All District and All-Academic. She has played club lacrosse for two years with the Toledo Wolf Pack and the last two years with the Michigan Cyclones. She ran cross country with the Eagles for three years and was named All-Academic. She did crew her freshman year.

 

An honor roll student, she has been involved the NDA Ski/Snowboarding Club. She has volunteered at the Toledo Animal Shelter and at the YMCA Splash Camp. She brought Christmas to the town of Harlan, Kentucky one year as part of the NDA Christmas in Appalachia program. She is a member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish.

She plans to study Nuclear Medicine Technology at the University of Findlay and received a yearly academic scholarship of $15,000 for a four-year value of $60,000 and a $500 one-time book award.
