Kiwanis Club of Toledo Awards $12,000 in Scholarships to TPS Seniors

Special to The Truth

The Kiwanis Youth Foundation, of the Kiwanis Club of Toledo, is proud to announce the designation of six scholarships to deserving high school seniors graduating in 2014. One senior from each Toledo Public Comprehensive High School was selected as a beneficiary of a $2,000 one-time scholarship to a college or university of their choice.

The Kiwanis Club of Toledo has been awarding scholarships to deserving teens, with a vested interest in community service since 1936. Historically, scholarships were awarded to only three central city schools: Woodward, Scott, and Libbey. Over the past 20 years, the Club has increased individual scholarship amounts and  reach to $2,000 for as many as 4 students. This year is unique in that over 30 seniors applied from all six Toledo Public Comprehensive High Schools.

Applicants are asked to provide a scholastic history, test scores, statement of need, activities, and an essay on what community service means to them. Patricia Scharf, Scholarship Committee Chair remarked, “It is a very special year for us. 2014 marks the first time in our Club’s 98 year history that we’ve received applications from all the high schools. As a former TPS HS Principal, it is especially rewarding for Kiwanis to give all schools and students across Toledo the opportunity to further their educational goals through this scholarship”.

Seniors receiving this year’s scholarship are: Cormac Jewell, Bowsher;  Keon Rayford, Rogers;  Shikera Tall, Scott; Sahirah Bruce, Start; Heather Riddle, Waite; Anastasia Rubin, Woodward.
