Lucas County Children Services and Foster Parents to
Recognize Foster Care Month
Foster care walk planned for May 22 in Downtown Toledo
Special to The Truth
May is National Foster Care Month, and Lucas County Children
Services? (LCCS) staff and foster families are taking to the
streets to recognize the work that foster parents do for
children and families in our community.
LCCS staff and some of the agency’s 260 foster care-giving
families will gather outside the LCCS offices at 705 Adams
Street (between Erie and Ontario Streets) on May 22 at 11:30
a.m. The group will walk to Levis Square at Madison Avenue
and St. Clair Street, and then back to LCCS, where the
foster parents will be treated to a light lunch.
The purpose is twofold: to celebrate the service that foster
parents provide, and to raise awareness of the need for more
foster parents in Lucas County. LCCS has more than 500
children in foster care at any given time, and more families
are needed – particularly families able to care for groups
of three or more brothers and sisters, and families able to
care for children with special needs.
Foster families provide a safe, stable and nurturing
environment for children and youth until they can either
safely reunite with their parents or establish other
lifelong family relationships. The caring commitment
provided by foster parents is essential for ending the
cycles of abuse, neglect or other family crises that often
prevent children from reaching their full potential.
LCCS provides supports for foster parents including free,
ongoing training; a stipend to help cover the cost of caring
for each child; and caseworkers who are available to answer
questions or address concerns about the children in their
care.
