Herzing University, Summit Academy Launch Partnership
Special to The Truth
Herzing University – Toledo and Summit Academy will launch a
unique academic partnership this fall that will provide high
school students some college-level coursework on-site as
part of their regular school day.
A Herzing instructor will spend Friday mornings at Summit
Academy,
2913 S. Republic Blvd.,
first teaching a professional development course, then a
business-related class. Through an articulation agreement
between the charter school and university, Summit Academy
students will be eligible to earn college credit.
Students at traditional public and parochial schools have
long had the opportunity in Ohio to earn college credit
while still attending high school, mainly through dual
enrollment and post-secondary education opportunities at
community colleges and public universities. However, the
Herzing-Summit collaboration is believed to be the first
partnership of its kind in Northwest Ohio between a
community school and a private university.
“We want to seek any strategic opportunity available to give
our students the best possible education,” said Joe Carone,
Summit Academy principal. “College-level coursework such as
this will prepare our students for success at the next
level, whether that means continuing their education or
entering the workforce in some capacity.”
“Summit Academy students have proven to be capable,
hard-working young people,” said Greg Guzman, Herzing
University-Toledo campus president. “This partnership will
continue to provide them with an academic challenge while
preparing them for the next level—and we’re pleased to be
part of such a groundbreaking collaboration.”
The proximity of the two schools to each other helps to make
the partnership a win-win situation. That proximity also
will allow Summit Academy students to visit Herzing
University throughout the academic year for career-oriented
workshops and other events.
