Delaina Lane did an individual performance on “The Death of
Emmett Till” and Brianna Frazier created a website on the
“National Association of Colored Women”.
Both girls are now qualified to compete at the national
level of NHD at College Park, MD on June 17, 2014.
“I am super-excited to be representing Ohio at NHD,” said
Lane. “I am extremely humbled to have this opportunity.”
Participation in National History Day is a major focal point
of humanities education at TECHS. Both girls had previously
qualified for the state contest at a regional competition in
Bowling Green in April. NHD is a yearlong project that
teaches historical process skills and content. Brianna
Frazier confirmed this by saying, “I have been working on
this project since August of 2013.”
Students choose a topic based on a theme, conduct deep
research using primary and secondary sources, develop a
thesis, and then support that thesis by creating a group or
individual project in one of the following categories:
exhibit, paper (individual only), website, documentary or
performance.
TECHS social studies teacher Mona Al-Hayani said, “NHD is
authentic, interdisciplinary, project-based and
inquiry-based pedagogy. It teaches a myriad of 21st-century
skills.”
During the nine years TECHS kids have participated only one
other project has made it to nationals.
There is a fundraising effort underway to help fund the trip
for these amazing young people on
Indiegogo.
