Growth Doesn’t Just Happen – Assume Nothing

By Tiffany Reynolds, Success Coach
The Truth Contributor

As we celebrate MLK Day and Black Histpry Month at this time of the year, I'm truly proud to learn how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr ignited the world with his unshakable faith. It would have given me a greater pleasure to learn from him directly.

However, instead I had the privilege to learn from my super heroes and mentors - my parents: Joseph Mitchell and Celeste Mitchell. It's because of Dr. King and my parents, along with some of you. We all should continue to carry the torch of pressing toward our dream.

I certainly can attest to being a recipient of carrying the torch - the dream in the making. This queen's dream unfolds. On January 3, 2014, the beginning of my dream unwrapped as I had the grand opening of my new business location - Tiffany Reynolds' Company, 3295 Levis Commons, Perrysburg, Ohio.

The purpose of my company is to provide premier leadership and personal development training to ignite leaders to discover their career passion. Although the weather was cold and unpleasant, I had to postpone the event. However, two of my wonderful friends: Vincent Wiggins and Cynthia Snodgrass made my day as they blazed the inclement weather and showcased their warm embrace. How sweet, indeed! I was over-joyed!

Actually, my dream is to become a renowned international speaker and teacher spreading the good news that Your dream, Your passion is waiting on you - don't just stand there - Do SUMthing! Growth Doesn’t Just Happen – Growth Gap Traps

In the book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth written by John Maxwell determines, "if you have dreams, goals, or aspirations, you need to grow to achieve them.  But, if you're like I was - and if you're like most people - you have one or more mistaken beliefs that create a gap that keeps you from growing and reaching your potential. Take a look at the following misconceptions about growth that may be holding you back from being an intentional as you need to be.

The Assumption Gap - "I Assume That I Will Automatically Grow"

When we are children, our bodies grow automatically.  A year goes by, and we become taller, stronger, more capable of doing new things and facing new challenges.  I think many people carry into adulthood a subconscious belief that mental, spiritual, and emotional growth follows a similar pattern. Time goes by, and we simply get better.  We're like Charlie Brown in Charles Schultz's Peanuts comic strip, who once said, "I think I've discovered the secret of life -- you just hang around until you get used to it." The problem is that we don't improve by simply living.  We have to be intentional about it.

Musician Bruce Springsteen commented, "A time comes when you need to stop waiting for the man you want to become and start being the man you want to be." No one improves by accident. Personal growth doesn't just happen on its own.  And once you're done with your formal education, you must take complete ownership of the growth process, because nobody else will do it for you.

As Michel de Montaigne observed, "No wind favors him who has no destined port." If you want your life to improve, you must improve yourself. You must make that a tangible target."
