AKA Founders’ Day Luncheon
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
Members of the Zeta Alpha
Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc celebrated
their 106th annual Founders’ Day with a program
on Saturday, February 15 at Parkway Place – the luncheon was
the culmination of a weekend of activities which highlighted
“The Golden Soros” – those members who have given service
for 50 years or more.
This year’s guest speaker
was First National Vice President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson,
a Life Member with more than 35 years of service. Buckhanan
Wilson is an active member of the Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has served as charter president
and organizer of the chapter’s Diamond Jubilee Pearls
Foundation.
“Together we will move
forward in service,” said Buckhanan Wilson to the luncheon
attendees. Buckhanan Wilson outlined for the chapter’s
members the obligations they faced in order to maintain and
enhance the service they provide to their global community.
Buckhanan Wilson is a
businesswoman in the greater Milwaukee community, having
worked in major corporate and non-profit positions for over
30 years. She is a senior vice president of Goodwill
Industries – responsible for 500 employees and serving
nearly 60,000 people annually with employment and support
services in southeastern Wisconsin and greater Chicago.
She holds a masters of
business administration from Clark Atlanta University and a
bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics
from Benedict College.
In addition to her duties
with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Buckhanan Wilson is also involved
with Top Ladies of Distinction (a past national officer);
the National Council of Negro Women and The Links, Inc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc began as a vision of nine college students on
the campus of Howard University in 1908. It is the oldest
Greek-letter organization established by African-American
women. The sorority has a legacy of service that deepens,
rather than ends, with college graduation. The goals of its
programs center on significant issues in families,
communities, government halls and world assembly chambers.
The Toledo chapter was an
outgrowth of a combined membership of graduate and
undergraduate members from the University of Toledo. In
1952 in the home of Reba Harris, Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter
was chartered. The first president was Kathryn Franklin.
Surviving Charter members are: Anna Marie Bolden and Helen
Cohen. Out of this group of 28 charter members, today the
chapter has grown to over 100 women. |
