AKA Sorority Conducts Community Event on World Refugee Day
World Refugee Day is recognized by the United Nations and is
acknowledged as one of several community impact days in
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s programs. World Refugee Day
falls each year on June 20 and is dedicated to refugees
around the globe. It was celebrated globally for the first
time on June 20, 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of
the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. It
was originally known as Africa Refugee Day, before the
United Nations General Assembly officially designated it as
an international day in December 2000.
Under the AKA’s local Zeta Alpha Omega’s chapter leadership
of President Andrea Price, MHA, FACHE; Vice President Treva
Jeffries Ed.D, and Global Impact Program Committee Chairman
Alexii Collins, a community event was held on Zoom.
Facts about Blacks and other Immigrants in the U.S. were
presented. The goal was to educate the community about what
“refugee” means and how is it different from an immigrant.
Corine Dehabey, program director of US Together in Toledo,
was the keynote speaker. She explained the process of how
refugees get to the U.S., which countries refugees are from
(who live in Toledo) and what their needs are. Lastly,
Dehabey explained the reason why they flee their countries. |
