Sojourner’s Truth Staff

Youngsters had the opportunity this weekend to learn a lot about books, basketball, art, music, dancing, poetry, among an assortment of skills at the Wayman Palmer YMCA on Saturday and Sunday, January 5 and 6. Pearls of Wisdom Global Mentoring & Sports Foundation presented a free weekend camp courtesy of sponsors, volunteers, donations and guest speakers.

Debra Sue, DJ Knot, Jodie Summers

Over 70 youngsters participated in the two-day event and they were assisted, coached and taught by over 20 adult volunteers.

The volunteers and guest speakers include Brandon Copeland, jujitsu instructor and motivational speaker; Debra Sue, Glass City Talent Agency; Dennis Hopson, NBA champ and all-time leading scorer at The Ohio State University, Big Trice of City Park Basketball League and Jodie Summers, poet and author, among others. Volunteers included coaches Glandoy Hill, Anthony Amison, Bruce Orr and Marcus Elliott Sr. Catering was provided by Savannahs Soul Kitchen.

Pearls of Wisdom is the brainchild of founder, CEO Reggie Aldridge, a Toledo native who started the organization in Atlanta during his time there. Aldridge is back home now and has brought the non-profit agency back with him.

The mission of Pearls of Wisdom is to reduce bullying; to educate kids on the importance of healthy living; to prevent drug abuse; to instill confidence; to encourage goal setting; to reduce school drop-outs and to instill a sense of the importance of being law abiding citizens.
