Children’s Theatre Workshop (CTW), in partnership with
Welcome Toledo-Lucas County, is preparing for their
production of “Muslim Voices,” a series of short plays that
feature the experiences of young Muslims in America.
CTW received a grant of $2,400 from the Toledo Community
Foundation’s Fund for Islamic Understanding, Education, and
Dialog to present “Muslim Voices.” Grants from this fund are
awarded to support projects, programs or services that
provide educational opportunities that promote a greater
understanding of Muslims and the Islamic faith.
CTW will present “Ten Years Test,” and “Fast Friends,” two
of the plays in the “Muslim Voices” repertoire, originally
written and performed by the Brooklyn Children’s Theatre in
New York. “Ten Years Test” is based on the true story of how
Eid became an officially recognized holiday in New York
through the efforts of Muslim students and their supporters.
In “Fast Friends,” Muslim children observe Ramadan for the
first time, and their non-Muslim classmates learn about its
origins and find ways to celebrate Ramadan through charity
work and giving.
“As theatre educators, we know we have a responsibility to
use our skills to amplify the stories of people who don’t
often see themselves represented. Telling these stories in
this way is an exciting opportunity to help establish a
space for these artists in Toledo,” says CTW Executive
Artistic Director Aimee Reid.
Auditions for “Muslim Voices” will be in April 2019. The
cast will feature Muslim and non-Muslim children ages 10+,
as well as adults, with some singing and dancing in each
play. Thanks to the support from TCF and Welcome
Toledo-Lucas County, this program will be completely free
for all participants, including audiences. Performances will
be in June 2019.
