Teach * Lead * Impact. As one of the oldest chapters in the
country, Jack and Jill Toledo Mother members are proud to
celebrate this historic journey with the community.
ProMedica and the Toledo
Museum of Art are serving as the Sapphire Ball title
sponsors. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is the
Literacy sponsor. Huntington Bank is the 65th
Anniversary Children’s Art Project sponsor. And, First
Federal Bank and Buckeye Broadband are event sponsors.
The Toledo Chapter was
chartered in December 1952 by a group of loving and
exceptional women who happened to also be dedicated mothers.
These 16 mothers who were all friends and leaders in the
community, felt the goals
of Jack and Jill closely paralleled those they envisioned
for their own families. These women came together to form a
chapter that fit the needs of their families and fostered
the nurturing of their children.
Past National President,
Dr. Alverta Turner of the Columbus, Ohio Chapter, installed
the Toledo Chapter as the 47th chapter in the
national organization, the sixth chapter in the Mid-Western
region and the fourth chapter in Ohio.
Today, members of the
Toledo Chapter work in a variety of capacities to include
educators, attorneys, doctors, business and civic leaders,
stay-at-home mothers, non-profit professionals and leaders
of industry with the belief that they can make a difference
in the lives of children and families. The current makeup of
the local chapter consists of 28 families and 47 children.
Over 200 children have
graduated out of the Toledo Chapter and have attended
numerous colleges and universities including: The Ohio State
University, Emory University, Jackson State University,
Johnson C. Smith University, Howard University, Morehouse
College, Belmont University, Loyola University, University
of Cincinnati, and University of Toledo.
In the chapter’s 65-year
history, members have focused on initiatives that empower
youth to be tomorrow’s global leaders, participants in
community service and philanthropic giving and embracers of
their cultural heritage. The monthly activities and events
enrich lives, nurture relationships and benefit our
communities. Family and children’s activities stimulate
growth and development, and aim to provide a constructive
educational, cultural, civic, recreational and social
experience.
Founded in 1938, Jack and
Jill of America, Inc., is a national not-for-profit
membership organization, and the oldest and largest
African-American family organization in the country. We are
dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by
strengthening children through leadership development,
volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty.
The core of Jack and Jill of America's philosophy is that
every child - if given the proper guidance and opportunity -
can be developed into a leader.
Today, the Jack and Jill
organization has more than 230 chapters nationwide,
representing more than 40,000 family members. Each chapter
plans annual programming activities, guided under a national
theme. Through service projects, Jack and Jill of America,
Inc. creates a medium of contact for children to stimulate
their growth and development.
Our children are our most
precious gifts. The Toledo Chapter of Jack and Jill,
Incorporated is proud to celebrate 65 phenomenal years of
Teaching, Leading, Impacting, with our children and for
our community.
