Sixty-one golfers hit the
links on Saturday, August 5, in a tournament hosted by the
Democratic Women in Action at the South Toledo Golf Club on
Heatherdowns. What they happened upon was perfect golf
weather, a wealth of raffle prizes and an abundance of
delicious food when the rounds of golf were complete.
The second annual DWIA
golf tournament is a way for the organization to raise funds
for some of their pet projects – most notably the YWCA of
Greater Toledo’s battered women’s shelter. The DWIA has had
a close relationship with the YWCA since the formation of
the club five years ago and the tournament is a way to
further increase their goal of assisting women in need.

“We’re known for our
consistency with the Y,” said Essie Wiggins, founder of DWIA
and the club president.
Wiggins founded the DWIA
in order to bring like-minded women together to help on
elections, to assist on outreach to community projects and
to support women candidates. There are about 40 members of
the DWIA.
The golfers at the charity
event represented a cross section of professions and
callings – business men and women, non-profit leaders, union
officials, elected officials and retirees. The event was
catered by Michael Hailey of Ebony’s Ribs, Chicken & Seafood
who served grilled chicken, pulled pork, cole slaw and
potato salad while the prizes were given out and the
tournament winners were announced. This year’s winning
foursome consisted of Daryl Nash, Anthony Keyseeker, Rick
Keyseeker and John Dygon.
The executive committee of
the DWIA served as volunteers for the charity golf
tournament.
