Groomed for Greatness Introduces Girls to Role Models

Groomed for Greatness is 5013C non-profit organization dedicated to introducing girls in the Toledo and surrounding area to positive female role models, providing them with the tools to be successful in life and inspiring them to do great things   Founded on February 1, 2017 by Toledo native Michelle McCaster, the organization serves girls ages four-18 and is focused on providing etiquette training, mentoring, self-esteem building, community service opportunities, financial literacy and leadership skills.

On Saturday, April 8, Groomed for Greatness hosted it first big event – appropriately titled, the Big Reveal Event – at the Garden Lake Hall. Twenty-eight members of the group attended along with about 175 family members and friends to hear keynote speaker Diana Patton and listen to music provided by DJ Keith Success.

Also in attendance were Council Members Larry Sykes, Cecelia Adams, PhD; Yvonne Harper, Council candidate Gary Johnson and Mayor Paula Hicks Hudson.

It is McCaster’s vision to be the mentor she wishes she had when she was younger.  Her objective is to provide the young ladies she mentors to embrace who they are, to be leaders in their community and become confident and self-sufficient. 

To date, the organization has been involved in various activities such as:

·         The Robert Easter Parade and 12th Annual African-American Festival Parade

·         Attended Author-Author series with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sponsored by the Lucas County Library (all attendees received autographed books and met the author)

·         Volunteered at the Laurels of Toledo and spent time with residents
 

·         Participated in etiquette, photography, sewing and financial literacy courses

·         Held and participated in a coupons class with the Frugalicious Divas in which donated items were sent to Mom’s House.

·         Adopted five girls from Flint, Michigan and provided Christmas gifts and a party on Christmas Eve in which the young ladies fellowshipped;

·         Attended the Dance Theatre of Harlem and met with performers;

·         Attended the Imagination Station “Girl Power” and Bowling Green State University STEM programs;

·         Attended a private showing of the movie Hidden Figures and held an essay contest about the movie;

·         Made the opportunity to meet with important political figures including the Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Municipal Clerk of Court Valle Bowman-English, and members of the Toledo City Council.

In the future, the club will participate in an array of activities and cultural experiences that will fosters new friendships and a true sense of self such as visits to cultural centers and events such as the Charles H. Wright Museum, Univer-Soul Circus, plays and performances, participate in workshops that will focus on etiquette, self-esteem building and life skills and engage in fun activities such as sleepovers, bonding with college mentors and family oriented programs.
