Jamaican Bobsled Team Visits St. Francis
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
It’s been almost 30 years
since the Jamaican Bobsled Team made its debut at the Winter
Olympics in Calgary in 1988. And who would have thought
that, decades later, Jamaica would still have teams
participating in winter sports events in spite of a lack of
cold, ice, snow or cash to support such endeavors?
Yet, here we are. A year
away from the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea and the
Jamaican Bobsled Team is touring the globe, raising funds
and seeking cooler climes in which to hone their skills.
On January 26, the team,
on the road from Lake Placid, NY to Calgary, stopped in at
Toledo’s St. Francis de Sales High School to talk about
their challenges both on and off the ice.
Over the years, the team
has improved quite a bit, notwithstanding the lack of cash,
the lack of proper conditions and even, as now, without a
coach. Of course, there is no dearth of world-class athletes
in Jamaica to cross over from the more traditional track
events in which the summer teams excel.
The team stopped at St.
Francis due to the involvement over the years of the
school’s president, the Rev. Geoff Rose, in a number of
missions to Jamaica.
The team has set up a
GoFundMe page to raise funds to pay a coach – gofundme.com/JamaicaBobsled.
