Shades of pink and vibrant accessories filled the Center of Hope Church, located at 1656 Dorr Street for their Shades of Pink Women’s Day service held on Sunday, October 22, 2017.

First Lady Willetta Perryman opened the service by welcoming all the guests. “Good to be here in the house of the Lord one more time. We’re here to celebrate and thank God for another year,”

A team of worship leaders comprised of Staci Perryman-Clark, PhD; Laurnetta Baylis of Canaan Manifested Word Church and Megan Davis of Braden United Methodist Church sang a spirit-filled rendition of the Lord’s Prayer as responsive readings were led by program honorees Prescilla Hutchens, Bessie Mack, Doris Brooks, Claudette Abrams, Hazel Pettaway, Jeanette Martin, Sharon Merritt, and Barbara Oxner.

“Today’s worship in pink tribute to breast cancer survivors, caregivers, and loved ones is one way that the African-American church can provide leadership to eradicate breast cancer. This year, we celebrate with even more fervor,” wrote Rev. Donald Perryman, DMin, pastor of Center of Hope in the program booklet.

The service continued an alter prayer that was dedicated to the survivors of breast cancer and led by Rev. Angeline Johnson of Warren AME; scriptural reading by Councilwoman Cecelia Adams, PhD, of New Hope Porter’s Grove Church and a sermon delivered by Rev. Susan Smith, DMin, founder of Crazy Faith Ministries.

“We as people heal. We can’t seek healing until the spirit has moved us to transcend out of difficulty,” explained Smith.

The worship in pink program committee: Willetta Perryman, program chair; Deacon Tracee Perryman, PhD, program co-chair; Barbara Oxner, program co-chair; Mary Westphal, Susan G Komen of NW Ohio executive director and Winda Burt, YWCA NW Ohio Healthy Connections Director.

The service was sponsored by Center of Hope, Susan G Komen of Northwest Ohio, and YMCA of NW Ohio.
