Celebrating Springfield Local Schools’ First African-American Principal

By Carla Yvette

A celebratory reception was held August 11 at L’Ambiance Hall in honor of Rhonda Jemison, newly-appointed principal of Springfield High School and the first African-American principal of a Springfield Local School in the district’s 100-plus year history.

Well wishers gathered to offer congratulations and support at the event hosted by Mildred Clark. Michael O’Shea, Ed.D, SLS Superintendent said there’s no doubt that he promoted the right person. “Rhonda is the right person at the right time. Her appointment is well deserved,” he noted.

Jemison, whose career as an educator began with Toledo Public Schools, brings 21 years experience to her new position. Jemison said that her experience as an educator for 21 years is not uncommon, but the richness of her diverse background is what’s important.

“Having taught at TPS and experienced the dynamics of that district, then moving to Bedford for seven years which is a completely different demographic and now at Springfield which is so rich in diversity for seven years has enhanced my ability to deal with everybody and see different perspectives,” she said.

Guests were treated to a buffet-style meal as heartfelt sentiments, well wishes and expressions of appreciation were offered from friends, family, colleagues. Close friend Robin Reeves served as mistress of ceremonies and music was provided by DJ Damage.
