Beta Gammas Celebrate QUAD Founders’ Day 2014
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
The Beta Gamma Chapter of
the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc celebrated 62
years of service on Saturday, May 10 at the Grand Plaza
Hotel under the theme “P.D.K. Sister to Sister.”
On Friday, May 23, 1952,
Sorors Lenora Williams-Farrow and Mayola Senior and a group
from Detroit – Chi Chapter – traveled to the old Douglas
Center on the corner of 11th Street and Pinewood
Avenue. That evening 12 chapter members were initiated. The
nest day, Saturday, May 24, 1952, the 12 traveled to
Detroit, very proud, honored and excited to celebrate
Founders’ Day with Chi Chapter.
The chapter grew from
those original 12 members to approximately 30 by the mid
1950’s. Most of the current members remember two of those
original members – Sorors Anne Marie Bolden and Ruby
Peoples. Bolden is the only living Beta Gamma Charter
Member.
The National Sorority was
founded on a Palm Sunday, April, 1923 by nine future
teachers in Jersey City, New Jersey. On May 23 of that year,
the sorority was incorporated – Founders’ Day.
Other chapters came along
very shortly after along the East Coast. These days, the
sorority has 125 chapters, over 4,000 members and chapters
throughout the U.S. South, Midwest and Far West and to
Liberia in western Africa.
The sorority is a
professional organization of teachers dedicated to the task
of training the youth of America to cope satisfactorily and
effectively with today’s problems.
The Beta Gamma Founders’
Day Committee was comprised of Co-Chairmen Pandra Taylor and
Linda Collins along with Basileus Dorothy Batson and First
Anti-Basileus Paula Martin.
The chapters 2013-2014
elected officers are: Batson, Martin, Second Anti-Basileus
Sandra Speller; Grammateus Rachelle Dunning; Epistoleus
Kathy Gregory; Tamiouchos Jacqueline Quinn; Tamias Rita
Oliver; Parliamentarian Ruthie Johnson; Chaplain Muriel Webb
Williams; Executive Advisor Taylor; Dean of Pledges Clara
Brank; Krinon Editor Helen Sallee and Public Relations
Officer Bessie Mack.
Soror Collins served as
mistress of ceremonies during Saturday’s program and
greetings were offered by Soror Batson and Soror Emma
Henderson, Midwest regional director.
Soror Gregory presented
the “Tribute to Our Founders.”
After lunch was served,
the P.D.K. Sorors performed a choral response – “Sister to
Sister.” Soror Taylor acknowledged the special guests and
Soror Moreland presented the “Special” recognition. The
sorors then presented gifts and Soror Batson offered the
closing remarks.
