Local AKA Chapter Sponsors Annual Scholarship Tea

The ladies of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter
sponsored their annual Scholarship Tea on April 27, 2014.
The program acknowledged 12 outstanding local graduating
seniors, and conducted final interviews to award
scholarships that range between $250-$1,000.

Chairman Lisa McDuffie served as the program mistress of
ceremonies and welcomed parents and guests to the 2014
event. “This is a wonderful day,” said McDuffie. “Welcome on
behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Zeta Alpha Omega
Chapter’s scholarship tea. This is a wonderful time of year
and our sorority takes pride in providing scholarships to
deserving student. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has
entered into another centaury of service and exciting about
continuing to move forward and focus on our young people.”
Zeta Alpha Omega
Chapter President Katrina Johnson credited parents for their
children’s academic success. “It was an honor and privilege
to sit where you are, just 25 years ago,” she told the
audience. “I applaud you, the parents, because it starts at
home by encouraging your children. Our sorority has awarded
over $200,000 in scholarship funds.”
Zeta Alpha Omega
Chapter Chaplain delivered a prayer and then Katrina Barry
and Pamela Green Jones introduced an interactive ice-breaker
for parents and students. Then the scholarship chair called
each student forward to receive a certificate of achievement
before the sorority members conducted interviews. The
interviews will serve as the final step in the selection
process. The sorority notified area schools when the
scholarship became available, the minimum requirements were:
3.0 GPA, documentation of passing all OGT testing,
acceptance into an accredited institution, and submission of
an essay. The sorority received over 60 scholarship
applications and 12 students were selected to participate in
the final interview. Selected students will be notified and
funds awarded by the beginning of the Fall 2014 semester.
The 2014 Scholarship
Committee members are: McDuffie, Barry, Green Jones, Theo
Simmons Hampton, Paula Martin, Debra Fulton, Muriel Webb
Williams and Zeta Alpha Omega President Johnson.
The 12 outstanding
graduating seniors are Maya Cogdell, Cierra Dreslinski,
Jasmine Fizer, Camille Gist, Jasmine Gray, Jourdan Greenlee,
Alizé Harris, Sharee Hood, Jahnee Horn, Allison Mitchell,
Keith Pace Jr and Alexus Woodley.
