Councilman Sykes Revises Proposed Ban on Vaping Products

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

Councilman Larry Sykes held a press conference on Wednesday, November 27, to announce that he has undergone a change of heart about a proposed ban on vaping products after contacting numerous business owners, state elected officials and health officials.

As a result, Sykes will be changing his proposed legislation on vaping products

Initially Sykes had proposed a ban on all flavored e-cigarette products in October. After his consultations, the councilman is calling for a ban of all e-cigarette and vaping product sales at gas stations, carry outs and grocery stores – establishments whose primary focus is not vaping products

“What I am proposing will allow adults over age 21 to have access to vaping products, including flavored products, but reduce the likelihood that youth will be successful in obtaining the products in the city,” he said.

The change on Sykes’ part, was prompted by information clarifying the danger posed by vaping products. According to the Centers for Disease Control, which have reported 47 deaths from vaping products in the country as of late November, vitamin E acetate is the chemical at issue among those with vaping-related lung illnesses. Vitamin E acetate is used as an additive for THC in e-cigarettes and vaping products.

However, according to local vape shop owners, who had criticized Sykes’ first ban proposal on flavored products, vitamin E acetate is not sold in their products – “those were illicit products,” said Bradley Everett, co-owner of Nice Cloud Vapor.

Sykes’ proposal now calls for a ban of vaping product sales at stores where such products account for less than 60 percent of the total sales and would allow for anyone 21 years or older to purchase any vape product, flavored or not.

“Limiting the sale of vaping products to those specialty establishments will reduce the likelihood that youth will be able to obtain these products in the city,” said Sykes.
