Buy ‘Geek Bus’ Coming to Toledo!
Special to The Truth
The Geek Bus is coming to
town to help give people in the community the tools they
need to be successful!
This project is a partnership between United Way of Greater
Toledo and Best Buy that will teach participants basic
computer skills, interview skills and how to write a résumé.
“This project came out of community conversations we had in
the Greenbelt community,” said Bill Kitson, United Way of
Greater Toledo president and CEO. “Residents commented there
were no resources available for them to learn the skills
that are so critical to being competitive in today’s
workforce.”
“At the same time, we were having conversations with Best
Buy about ways they could become engaged in our education
work and the idea of the Geek Bus became the obvious perfect
partnership.”
The Geek Bus will travel to Greenbelt Apartments and also
Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority (LMHA) sites to hold
its six-week program with local residents. Participants will
go through a series of courses teaching them how to
disassemble, rebuild and use a computer; use basic Microsoft
Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and
also interviewing and résumé-building skills.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to
people in these communities,” commented Jennifer Chopp,
Community Partnership Program Lead at Best Buy. “United
Way’s focus on education is very important to Best Buy and
this partnership was a natural way we could help move that
work forward.”
